Heartburn

Heartburn is caused by acid refluxing back in the esophagus. Some common foods that we eat or drink can stimulate increased stomach acid secretion, which can set the stage for heartburn. Examples of these irritants include alcohol, caffeine, carbonated beverages, and acidic foods.

Signs & Symptoms:

  • Burning sensation behind the sternum or breastbone. Sometimes this pain can be mistaken for a heart attack.

Treatment options for heartburn include lifestyle changes, heartburn medications, and surgery for those people whose pain isn’t relieved by other therapies.
