Surgery is generally the best treatment for rectal cancer. Transanal Tumor Resection is performed for patients with early stage I rectal cancer. The procedure is done with instruments put into the rectum through the anus, while the patient is under local anesthesia, in which the surgeon cuts through all layers of the rectal wall to take out the cancer.
This procedure can be used to remove early stage I rectal cancers that are small and not too far from the anus, preventing the cancer from spreading.
